When the temperature at Camp Mabry ticked up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit sometime after 2 p.m. this afternoon, it marked the 40th day this year of triple digit temperatures in Austin.
That’s more than the 35 triple digit days we saw last year but still not as high as the record-breaking 90 triple digit days in 2011. The average number of triple digit days recorded annually at Camp Mabry is 13.
At 3:33 p.m., Camp Mabry recorded the hottest temperature of the day, 103 degrees. The record for September 4 is 110 degrees, set in 2000. The normal high is 94. You can access archived weather data for Austin at this National Weather Service page.
We could see lower temperatures in the near future.
“This high pressure that’s been plaguing us for the last couple of months really is going to start shifting off to the east, which is actually going to bring just slightly cooler temperatures into Central Texas, definitely sub-100 degree heat, " National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologist Aaron Treadway said.
The NWSforecast for next week calls for highs in the upper 90s.
"It's definitely starting the September trend of getting a bit cooler," he said. "We're crossing our fingers for a cool off."
