Vets Commission Gives Out $3M Despite Dwindling Lotto Funding

The Texas Veterans Commission gave out $3 million in grants today to more than two dozen organizations across the state that help veterans readjust to civilian life.

About $800,000 of it will go to programs that assist veterans here in Central Texas.

More than 90 percent of the grant funding comes from sales of a $2 scratch-off ticket Texas Lottery game. Ticket sales have been down over the past several months.

"We would love it, whether or not you play the lottery game, to encourage others that do to go ahead and purchase the Veterans Cash lottery game because all of the funding in the Fund for Veterans' Assistance goes out to non-profits and units of local government throughout the state of Texas," Director of the Fund for Veterans Assistance Kathy Wood said.

Last month the fund debuted a newly-designed ticket. Officials hope it will help attract more sales.
