Time to Make the Doughnuts: Colt McCoy Opening Two Dozen Dunkin’ Stores in Austin
The Austin Yellow Pages lists 39 doughnut shops in the Capital City.
Now former Longhorn Colt McCoy, known better for passing the pigskin than passing the crullers, is set to increase that number by more than half: An investment crew lead by the former UT quarterback is planning on bringing two dozen Dunkin’ Donuts stores to Austin.
Coffee Action West, a corporation including McCoy as a partner, announced plans Monday to open 21 “traditional” Dunkin' Donuts restaurants and three Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin-Robbins combo-stores in the metro area. The first store is planned to open in Cedar Park in 2013.
Just how well will the doughnut explosion mesh with Austin? The city’s widely renowned as a breakfast taco-kinda town, with doughnuts either offered on the cheap (see Ken’s Donuts, Mrs. Johnson’s Bakery), as second fiddle to the Central Texas delicacy known as the kolache, or kicked up a notch into the high-end (i.e., Gordoughs).
But while Dunkin’ Donuts is more popular on the East Coast, a press release announcing the deal trumpets the fried-dough purveyor’s Texas bonafides, including “the nation's ﬁrst Dunkin' Donuts baking and pastry classroom” at San Antonio’s Culinary Institute of America campus.
