Last month Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell made a much-debated statement while answering questions on Reddit: He said Taco Cabana makes some of his favorite breakfast tacos.
Mando Rayo, a self-described “taco journalist” in a city that takes its breakfast tacos very seriously, decided to press the issue. On Tuesday, Rayo picked up breakfast tacos from one of his favorite Austin taco spots, Veracruz All Natural, and hand-delivered them to Mayor Leffingwell’s office.
It's a subject Rayo is passionate about. He and and his fellow taco journalist Jarod Neece recently authored a book on the subject: “Austin Breakfast Tacos: The Story of the Most Important Taco of the Day.”
At the so-called “taco intervention,” Rayo explained why he wanted his mayor to experience the best breakfast tacos Austin has to offer. “It’s just an introduction into some of the best tacos and taquerias here ... it’s a way for him to get to know a little bit more about the taco culture of Austin.”
For his part, Leffingwell seemed genuinely impressed. After his first bite from a migas taco from Veracruz All Natural, the mayor happily finished it and said it was one of the best tacos he’d ever eaten.
"People in Austin take their tacos seriously," Leffingwell said. "A lot of people work hard to develop a unique breakfast tacos. There's lots of different kinds – they're not just plain bacon and egg tacos like I'm used to eating, there's all different kinds."
