From Bike Austin, this month's Get Involved spotlight organization:
Bike Austin is the largest membership-based bicycle advocacy and education organization in central Texas. We are working to help transform the transportation landscape into a space that is safe and hospitable to people of all ages and abilities to move freely. Our aim is to see the number of people choosing to ride bicycles increase, especially for short trips, and it become a normal aspect of daily living for residents of Austin and the surrounding communities.
We are currently working with the City of Austin and CapMetro to encourage people to utilize both active and public transportation options rather than using a motor vehicle through the Smart Trips Austin program. This summer and fall we will be facilitating transit adventures by bus, on foot, and by bike throughout the neighborhoods in 78702 and 78722. Oh, and we are hiring and Eastside Outreach Ambassador! If you are passionate about helping people connect with their community and increase their mobility by walking, bicycling, riding the bus, and carpooling. If you are an invested and involved community member of the Central East Austin neighborhoods including Austin Heights, Blackshear, Blackland, Chestnut, Cherrywood, Foster Heights, McKinley Heights or O.C.E.A.N., then this may be the job for you! Learn more here. Applications are due Monday, June 16 to katie@bikeaustin.org.
The May Biking Challenge just wrapped up, but individuals and organizations can still register for the National Bike Challenge with Love to Ride (and maybe even win a trip to New Zealand!). Tracking your mileage and engaging in friendly competition with other people riding bikes is fun and can be rewarding. We invite you to join us for the ride!
