Austin is getting a good steady soaking this weekend. Light rain showers and patchy drizzle started this morning and have continued this afternoon. Downtown Austin got about half an inch of rain over the last 24 hours. A cold front arrives in Central Texas overnight. We’ll wake up to temperatures in the 50s tomorrow morning with a greater chance for isolated thunderstorms.
But tonight, whether it's raining or not – KUT will still host the Holiday Sing-A-Long starting at 6 p. m. at the South Steps of the Capitol. The Capitol tree will be lit for the holiday season at 7 p. m.
The Trail of Lights has returned to Austin this holiday season. But it’s not quite the same as the annual light show in Zilker Park. A significantly sized down light show starts tonight at the Long Center for the Performing Arts.
Mark Truett told KUT News staff took some of the Trail of Lights decorations and displayed them at the Long Center's city terrace.
"We’ll have it up until just after the first of the year, January 3rd," Truett said.
The traditional trail was paired back last year, because of city budget cuts. This year the event was completely canceled but the city says it wants to bring it back next year.
The City of Austin will continue the season's tradition of lighting the 155-foot Zilker Holiday Tree. The official lighting ceremony is Sunday, Dec. 4th at 6 p. m.
The city has closed the Zilker Park Polo Fields. There will be no public parking there. City officials say the land is too muddy and slick to allow cars on it.
