Austin Natives to Square Off in NFL Wild-Card Round

When the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Dallas Cowboys Sunday night, many Texas football fans hung their heads. 

But with an Eagles victory comes an NFC wild-card game that could answer a definitive question for Central Texas high school football fans: Who was the greatest Westlake quarterback?

A decade apart, New Orleans Saints' quarterback Drew Brees and the Philadelphia Eagles' Nick Foles both led the Westlake Chapparals to state championships and remain among the most storied players in the school's history. But tomorrow's NFC wild-card game could prove, at least this season, who the best Chap in the NFL really is.

Westlake Graduate Honored in DC as Presidential Scholar

Less than one percent of high school seniors across the country are named National Merit Scholars. Less than one-tenth of one percent of students who take the ACT, score a perfect 36. And just four high school seniors from Texas were recognized as Presidential Scholars on Sunday.

Keyur Mehta – a recent Westlake grad – has earned all of these honors and more. He stopped by KUT before his trip to Washington, D.C.

Westlake HS Open After Scare

Westlake High School is open for classes, after a written threat discovered on campus yesterday lead to an extensive overnight search.

Officials didn’t reveal the exact nature of the threat, but an email from Westlake principal John Carter says “School will operate as normal, with an increased security and adult presence in and around the campus. The first period bell just sounded moments ago and classes have started.”

426 Austin Bridges are 'Good' or 'Excellent' - But This One Isn't

It may be time for a do-over on the Emmett Shelton bridge.  

Better known as the Red Bud bridge or the "Low Water" bridge, it spans Lady Bird Lake just below Tom Miller Dam, linking Austin to newer communities to the west.

The city's latest proposed bond package includes $3 million to design a "better bridge at a better angle" across the lake, according to Austin Public Works spokesperson Sara Hartley. She says the bridge is the only one in Austin that is not rated structurally "good" or better, though she says its rating of "fair" means that it is safe to travel.
