Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez plans to evaluate a wider range of alleged crimes in determining whether to hand over jail inmates to federal immigration authorities. 

Hernandez changed the policy at the Travis County Jail earlier this month, saying deputies would honor Immigration and Customs Enforcement requests to detain people for possible immigration violations only if an inmate was booked on capital murder, murder, aggravated sexual assault or human trafficking charges.

Travis County voters are set to elect a new sheriff for the first time in 12 years.

Among the four candidates running for Travis County Sheriff, a key issue is the Priority Enforcement Program, led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, flags people booked into the Travis County Jail who may be in the country illegally, potentially leading to their deportation.

The Travis County Sheriff's Office is warning of significant traffic impacts Tuesday morning as a result of the funeral procession for Sergeant Craig Hutchinson, 54, who was shot to death at his home in Round Rock last Monday.

A reward is out for information leading to the arrest of his killer.

Police are asking those who want to pay their respects to Sgt. Hutchinson along the procession route to do so safely.
