Memorial Day Weekend Street Closures

It wouldn’t be a major weekend in Austin without some downtown street closures.

Don’t worry, as KUT News has everything you need to know to navigate Austin this Memorial Day weekend.  

Sunday: As a precursor to Memorial Day’s Capital of Texas Triathlon, organizers are hosting a Doggie Du Dash and Kids K fun run – meaning the following streets will be closed:

If it’s a weekend in Austin, there must be some special events. And special events mean road closures. Five big events are happening this weekend, and KUT News has mapped the closures above. Here’s more on what’s happening:

  • Chuy’s Hot to Trot 5K and Kid-K: Chuy’s Arbor Trails location is sponsoring a 5K run Saturday, May 5. The Kid-K is approximately a half-mile and everyone receives a medal as they cross the line. Online registration for the event is closed, but in-person registration is available Friday until 8 p.m. and Saturday beginning at 6:30 a.m.

Traffic Trouble: All Southbound Lanes Closed on I-35 Near U.S. 183

Update: All lanes have been reopened, reports TxDOT.

Original Post: The Texas Department of Transportation says all southbound lanes of North Interstate 35 are closed just south of the U.S. 183 exit because of a major crash.

Traffic is being detoured to the access road.

Map: Texas Relays, Urban Music Festival and More Events Mean Street Closures

A full weekend in Austin creates several street closures.

The 85th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays have returned to Austin.

Track and field action at the Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium kicked off on Wednesday and stretches through Saturday. More than 6,000 athletes from high schools and colleges across the country will be competing.

The relays are accompanied by a host of other activities in town, meaning street closures and traffic delays.

Colorado Street Down to One Lane While 'Great Streets' Project Starts

Travel down one-way Colorado Street will be restricted though the end of June, as the city readies $6 million worth of improvements.

Only one lane will be open between Third and Fifth Street, while the Colorado Street Reconstruction Project gets underway.

Approved by the Austin City Council in December, the initiative is part of the city’s Great Streets project, creating pedestrian-friendly streets similar to those on Second Street, seen above.

Lane Closures Planned for Oltorf

There’s a new construction project starting on Oltorf Street next week.  The drainage improvement construction will reduce traffic flow near South Congress Avenue from two lanes to one lane each way beginning on March 19.

It’s part a project to install storm drains, water lines, and curbside inlets in the neighborhood bordered by Oltorf Street, South Congress Avenue, Cumberland Avenue and South First Street.

Construction will begin just east of Durwood Street and end shortly before Congress Avenue. The lane reduction will run through the end of May.

As South by Southwest Interactive comes to a close, the SXSW Music festival is gearing up – and with it, a new, vastly expanded round of street closures.

The closures that began during the SXSW Interactive and Film festivals will stay in effect. And a new slate of traffic snarls, depicted in the map above, began at 5 a.m. this morning.

Sixth Street Lane Closures This Afternoon

If traffic downtown wasn’t bad enough already: Three lanes are closed on Sixth Street, from Guadalupe to Nueces while the city makes emergency repairs. And the lanes won’t reopen until well after afternoon rush hour.

Get ready Austin: the South by Southwest Interactive and Film festivals are starting Friday, March 9. 

The City of Austin has announced the first of several street closures and lane reductions beginning Friday.

  • Northbound Congress Avenue will be reduced to two lanes between Seventh and Eighth streets from 10 a. m. to 11 p. m.
  • The Rainey St. district will be closed to traffic between Driskill and River streets from 3 p. m. to 11 p.m.
  • Trinity St. will be closed between Cesar Chavez.
  • Fourth streets and East Second and Third streets will be closed between Trinity and San Jacinto streets from 7 a. m. to  6 a. m.

Street Closures, ‘No Refusal’ Blood Draws for Fat Tuesday

The Sixth Street entertainment district is closed to traffic, and portions of the I-35 access road will be closed as well this Fat Tuesday.

Downtown revelers will need to take extra precautions this Fat Tuesday. Several street closures are in effect this evening, while Austin Police have announced the holiday means another “No Refusal” action where police can subpoena and draw suspected drunk drivers’ blood.

As seen in the map detail above, full closures are in effect on all the side streets off of Sixth, between the southbound I-35 access road and Brazos, starting at 9 p.m. Neches, from Sixth to Seventh street, will also be closed starting at 5:30 p.m.  You can view a full map of the closures on the city website.

Mapping Street Closures for the LiveStrong Marathon

As seen in this map, numerous street closures accompany the LiveStrong Austin Marathon this weekend.

The LiveStrong Austin Marathon gets underway this Sunday, and the race means several street closures in the urban core. 

The earliest of the closures -- the red lines marked in the map above, which you can also view and download online -- affect Congress Avenue and several side-streets between 11th and 5th street. Those closures begin Saturday, Feb. 18, at 4 a.m, and will extend until  6.p.m on Sunday.

City Round-Up: Street Closures, Surplus Sales, and Parking Goes Mobile

It wouldn’t be a weekend in Austin without a few street closures, but this one’s lasting a little longer than most. The city advises West 34th Street, between Medical Parkway and Lamar Boulevard will be closed for three months, as the city repairs pipes under the stretch of street.

Record Number of Street Closures Planned Saturday

Austin’s merciless summer is over and that means more people are planning outdoor weekend events. This Saturday, Austin will host eight events downtown, setting a record for the number of simultaneous street closures. That's according to the city’s transportation department.
