Astronaut Sally Ride Urges Austin Girls To Pursue Science & Math

America's first female astronaut Sally Ride was in Austin today to inspire young girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.

The first American woman to travel in space was in Austin today. Dr. Sally Ride gave the keynote address at an annual luncheon for GirlStart, a local non-profit devoted to getting girls interested in science, technology, engineering and math.

Ride spoke by cellphone with KUT before catching a trip home to San Diego.

Local Math Whiz Visits White House

Dan Liu is a 16-year-old senior at Austin ISD's Liberal Arts and Science Academy at LBJ High School.  Yes, he's just 16 and going to graduate high school this Spring.  Liu and some of his friends at math camp won the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology. It's a science competition for high school students.
