The story of Austin's Australian opal will come to an end next month when members of the Adelaide City Council come to town to celebrate its sister city-ship with Texas' Capital City. Adelaide, the capital city of the state of South Australia, was designated in 1983 as one of Austin's sister cities. That's why, 32 years ago this Saturday, Adelaide officials gifted a $50,000 opal to Austin — a gift that the Australian city now wants back.

Adelaide newspaper The Advertiser reported back in May that the opal, which was worth $10,000 at the time, was “donated” to Austin as a result of an Adelaidian feud. Papers from the area report “mysterious” circumstances surrounding the gift.

So what brings an overseas band to Austin? Exactly what appeals to young bands across the world: touring, playing music and meeting fans.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of sisterhood between Austin and Adelaide, Australia, one of Austin’s 12 sister cities.

Deputy Lord Mayor Michael Llewellyn-Smith of Adelaide spoke today at City Hall. He reminisced of the long relationship between the two cities, in particular a time when he had BBQ with Lady Bird Johnson.
