KUT News wins six awards from Houston Press Club

AUSTIN, Texas — July 22, 2014 — KUT won six 2014 Lone Star Awards from the Houston Press Club Friday in recognition of outstanding achievements in journalism in Texas.

Politics reporter Ben Philpott earned first place for "Radio Journalist of the Year," while city reporter Joy Diaz earned second place in the category.

AUSTIN, Texas—June 11, 2014 — A KUT News story about a legally blind Austinite running the Boston Marathon has won a National Edward R. Murrow award in recognition of outstanding achievement in electronic journalism.

AUSTIN, Texas — May 19, 2014 — The Cactus Cafe, one of Austin's iconic acoustic music traditions, is proud to announce that Jeff Tweedy will perform in the Texas Union Ballroom on Saturday, June 21, as part of the Cactus' yearlong 35th anniversary celebration.

Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. CDT on Friday, May 23, at Tickets for this fund raising event are $85 and general admission. The 700-seat Texas Union Ballroom is the smallest venue on Tweedy's summer tour.

MapJam's "Summer Jam 2014" takes place at Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co. (ABGB) on Saturday, June 21. Keeping with the Austin Music Map tradition of featuring the city's best kept musical secrets, Summer Jam will showcase three very different genres of music: Afro-Latin, Cajun and psych-dub.

AUSTIN, Texas — May 19, 2014 — A KUT News special on the JFK assassination 50 years later is a finalist in the prestigious 2014 New York Festivals® The World’s Best Radio Programs™.

"One Day in Dallas: JFK's Assassination 50 Years Later," co-produced by David Brown and Emily Donahue, is one of four U.S. finalists in the history category. The production, first broadcast Nov. 22, 2013, is one of the first by the core team behind the forthcoming daily news program, Texas Standard

PHILADELPHIA –May 15, 2014 — The Corporation for Public Broadcasting today announced a $750,000 grant for a historic collaboration between five public media stations to build a new, national, online music video showcase featuring exclusive live performances of new and emerging bands.

Code named the "Music X Project," this service plans to launch by the end of 2014.  The five founding stations are KCRW in Los Angeles, KTBG in Kansas City, KUTX in Austin, WFUV in New York City, and WXPN in Philadelphia. 

KUT News wins four regional Edward R. Murrow awards

AUSTIN, Texas—April 23, 2014—KUT News has won four regional Edward R. Murrow awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) in recognition of excellence in electronic journalism.

The awards were in the Region 6 (Oklahoma and Texas) large market radio category for the following projects produced in 2013:

AUSTIN, Texas — April 23, 2014 — For the second year in a row, KUT StateImpact Texas reporter Mose Buchele has received the Charles E. Green Award for Best Reporter in the radio category.

Sponsored by the Headliners Foundation of Texas, the Charles E. Green Awards honor journalists in Texas who produce the very best news reporting and design.

AUSTIN, Texas — April 8, 2014 — Central Texans raised nearly $800,000 to support the news, information and cultural programming on KUT 90.5, Austin's NPR station, and the music programming on KUTX 98.9, the Austin Music Experience.

Close to 4,500 individuals and businesses participated in the spring membership drive, which began March 26 and concluded at 9 a.m., April 4. Forty-one percent of participants were first-time donors with more than 30 percent of donors becoming sustaining members.

AUSTIN, Texas — March 25, 2014 — KUT's StateImpact Texas energy and environment reporter Terrence Henry has received a fellowship to study the policies that led to the successful deployment of renewable energies like offshore wind and large-scale solar in Europe, and the lessons they could hold for Texas.

AUSTIN, Texas — March 17, 2014 — A KUT News story about a legally blind man preparing to run the Boston marathon has won the radio category in the 31st Annual Barbara Jordan Media Award sponsored by the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities.

AUSTIN—March 12, 2014—KUTX 98.9 has been voted “Best Radio Station” in the Austin Chronicle’s 32nd annual music poll.

This is the first time the station has earned this distinction since KUTX launched last year. Sister station KUT 90.5, Austin's NPR station, landed at No. 3 in the poll.
