Longhorns Limping Into Final Game

Mack Brown's Nov. 26 press conference.

The University of Texas Longhorns have what could be their toughest game of the year Saturday against seventh-ranked Kansas State. But the team is still dealing with a deflating loss to Texas Christian University on Thanksgiving night.

Hopes of a Big 12 title this season have now been reduced to playing the spoiler against Kansas State. If the Wildcats win Saturday, the team will claim it's first Big 12 title since 2003.

Each of the Longhorns' losses this season has been a blow from another Big 12 member (Oklahoma, West Virginia, TCU).

Mack Brown: Longhorn Network Leaving UT a 'Little Overexposed'

Longhorns coach Mack Brown vented his frustrations with the Longhorn Network yesterday.
KUT News

If you ask a Longhorn fan their thoughts about the Longhorn Network, you might hear complaints about its cable carrier agreements. Ask a rival team's fans, and you might hear grumblings about the cash cow the network represents for the Forty Acres.

But if you ask University of Texas head football coach Mack Brown his thoughts about the Longhorn Network, you might just get a piece of his mind.

That's what happened yesterday at Brown’s weekly press conference, where he spoke rather frankly about the effect the network is having on the Horns this football season.

Brown argued that the Longhorns are a “little overexposed” this year. He cited a conversation he had with Baylor Head Coach Art Briles where he was told that “Baylor sees every practice.” He also thinks that opponents north of Waco are watching too.

Longhorn Network on AT&T U-verse: What We Know Now

UT's first two football games of the season will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network.
KUT News

We’re learning more details about the Longhorn Network’s deal with AT&T U-verse.

Texas U-verse customers with at least the U100 package can watch the network on channel 1609 (channel 609 SD). Outside of Texas, customers will need to have the U-verse U450 package to watch.

ESPN says the agreement will bring the network to more than a million Longhorn fans in Texas and throughout the country. The Longhorn Network has been around for one year but, up until now, has not been widely available.

Officials with ESPN say the deal to bring the Longhorn Network to AT&T U-verse happened early this morning.

Good morning and happy Friday. It may be a long weekend for many as Labor Day approaches.

It's Official: Longhorn Network on AT&T U-verse

University of Texas at Austin Women's Athletic Director Chris Plonsky confirms this morning that the Longhorn Network is now available for AT&T U-verse customers.

The Twittersphere is buzzing with the news that the LHN is now available on AT&T U-verse channel 1609.

In a report KUT News aired this morning, David Preschlack, ESPN’s head of affiliate relations said: “We’re doing everything that we can to get full distribution of the network. There’s nothing more important that I’m working on personally. And to me this is not an if, it’s a when, and we’re hopeful that we get there just as quickly as possible.”

That “when” finally sounds like "now" for local Longhorn fans.

A&M's Outsourcing Plans Have Workers Concerned

Callie Richmond for Texas Tribune

When the Texas A&M University System announced that its flagship would gain $260 million in new revenue and savings in the next 10 years by outsourcing its building maintenance, landscaping and dining services, Chancellor John Sharp said the plan was an unprecedented way to raise money in financially struggling higher education.

“Today’s announcement means more money will be available to recruit, pay and retain faculty and researchers,” he said at a news conference on June 21.

But excitement over the plan is not universal. Many people on campus and in the surrounding community are worried and angry. A&M staff members who perform the support services have expressed concern over their future employment. And Bryan-College Station vendors fret that they could lose one of their biggest clients.

Watching this weekend's Texas-Kansas football game won't be easy, if you're not at the stadium Saturday night.

The game will be televised on the Longhorn Network. That cable channel, a joint venture between U.T. and ESPN, is still not available to subscribers of Time Warner Cable, Austin's largest cable provider.

3-D Video Projection on UT Tower Tuesday and Wednesday Nights

The University of Texas Tower will serve as a canvas for some innovative three-dimensional video art this week as part of a promotion being filmed for ESPN’s Longhorn Network.

This isn’t 3-D video in the sense that you need glasses to observe it. Rather, the video is “mapped” to fit the dimensions of the building upon which it is being projected.

Quintana Arrested For Domestic Dispute

Former Austin police officer Leonardo Quintana was arrested by Leander police yesterday.  He was charged with four misdemeanors connected to a reported domestic violence incident last year.  Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo fired Quintana (for the second time) over the incident late last month.  The first firing was for a DWI arrest.  An arbitrator ruled that punishment was too severe.  Quintana is the APD officer who fatally shot Nathaniel Sanders in northeast Austin last year.
