A national same-sex marriage rights group has launched an effort across several states in the South to campaign for marriage equality.

Southerns for Freedom to Marry, a branch of the New York-based group Freedom to Marry, has mounted a $1 million campaign across nine states including Texas.

Rep. Joaquin Castro: A Path to Citizenship is Coming

Texas has the most at stake in the immigration debate, U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro said at the TAB conference in Austin.

With immigration reform on the agenda in Washington, U.S. Congressman Joaquin Castro of San Antonio predicted today that some sort of path to citizenship will be created for undocumented workers. 

At the annual Texas Association of Business conference today, Castro said the current immigration system creates a second class of people who can never gain citizenship. However, he believes that society's changed views on immigration ultimately will lead to change in policy.

Doggett to Run in District 25

Congressman Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, has filed to run for reelection in District 25, based on maps okayed by a three-judge federal panel then stayed by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Longtime U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, has decided to run for reelection in Texas's 25th Congressional District.

That's the district he represents now, but the boundaries were dramatically shifted by the 2011 Texas Legislature to favor a Republican candidate.

The lines were altered again by a three-judge federal panel late last month. Then the U.S. Supreme Court stayed use of those maps, pending a hearing before the high court January 9.

Castro To Take On Doggett for New Congressional Seat

U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, the nine-term, liberal Austin congressman, foiled Republicans’ efforts to redistrict him out of office in 2003 and intends to do it again in 2012, living “in a Winnebago, if that’s what it takes,” to vie for a newly-drawn district that encompasses San Antonio’s most Democratic and Hispanic neighborhoods and spreads up to southern Travis County.

The Republican Legislature drew him a bad map again this year, and getting through March’s Democratic primary could be a doozy. At a minimum, Doggett will face State Rep. Joaquin Castro, a 36-year-old rising star in his party who has politics in his DNA — his identical twin brother Julián is San Antonio’s mayor — and grew up in one of the San Antonio neighborhoods central to the new district.
