HEB Recalls Ground Beef After Customers Complain of Metal & Illness

Over 90,000 pounds of HEB ground beef products have been recalled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture after four consumers complained of metal in their ground beef, which was shipped from Sam Kane Beef Processing in Corpus Christi.

The USDA cautions consumers against four batches of ground beef:

  • Three-pound packages of “HEB Ground Chuck" with the location identification number 337.
  • Five-pound packages of “HEB Ground Beef” with 73 to 29 percent lean-to-fat ratio and the identification number 337 and a production date of Sept. 15, 2014 and a use by date of  Oct. 5, 2014.
  • 10-pound packages of “HEB Ground Beef” with 73 to 29 percent lean-to-fat ratio and the identification number 337 and a production date of Sept. 18, 2014 and a use by date of  Oct. 8, 2014.
  • 10-pound packages of pre-formed patties with the identification number 337 and a production date of Sept. 9, 2014 and a use by date of  Sept. 29, 2014.

H-E-B Cites the Presence of 'Foreign Materials' in Voluntary Beef Recall

H-E-B has issued a voluntary recall for some of its beef products.

H-E-B has issued a voluntarily recall of 13 items due to the "possible presence of a foreign material." 

The San Antonio-based grocer said no customers have reported illnesses, but they recalled certain skirt steaks, beef fajitas and stew meats with packaging dates as early as June 9 as a precautionary measure.

Central Market Could Shift to Smaller Stores

Central Market, H-E-B's gourmet grocery store chain, is looking at smaller spaces for future locations.

Central Market is going to start experimenting with smaller stores, as it struggles to find retail space in prime locations. The H-E-B-owned gourmet grocery store chain is opening a new location in Dallas next year that is 30,000-square feet, about half the size of its existing stores, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

"I would estimate if the right locations were available for a smaller size footprint, I think we could find several more locations in the Metroplex,” Central Market senior vice president Stephen Butt told the newspaper.

Texas Produced Okra Is Recalled

Breaded okra made in McAllen, TX is being recalled because the food contains whey, a milk ingredient, that was not properly labeled.

A frozen food company baed in McAllen is voluntarily recalling its breaded okra because the food may contain whey, a milk ingredient. Magic Valley Fresh Frozen Inc. makes okra under the HEB label and sells in Texas grocery stories.

The 24-ounce and five-pound breaded okra bags under the HEB brand label were made from July 1, 2010 to Jan. 31 of this year.

No one has reported an allergic reaction because of the okra.
