Fest-Goers Turn to Chargebacks After Friday's Fun Fun Fun Fest Line Snafu

Fun Fun Fun Fest attendees waited hours in the will call line that stretched as far as City Hall to get into the festival on Friday.
Jorge Sanhueza-Lyon/KUT

The Fun Fun Fun Fest will call line blew up the Internet on Friday night.

The hours-long line that backed up across Lady Bird Lake inspired a parody twitter account, a couple of irate Reddit threads and prompted an apology from the fest’s organizers, Transmission Entertainment.

The variables that caused the backup stretch almost as far as the line itself – the festival’s queue this year formed into one line, as opposed to multiple lines like in previous years, because of construction at Auditorium Shores; the will call line was understaffed; talks between the City of Austin and Transmission broke down as they were trying to find a quick fix for the line. The list goes on. And so did the line. Until about 8 p.m., when organizers dissolved the front gate and allowed people a chance to catch the last Friday acts free of charge.

For some, (including this reporter) it was a footnote to an otherwise pleasant festival experience. Others, it seemed, wanted revenge.

Since Transmission has kept a strict no refund policy since 2006, some are turning to credit card chargebacks, a work-around that could refund those with un-scanned tickets on the grounds that they didn’t get what they paid for.

Beards Versus Drag Queens: Just a Typical Afternoon in Austin

The may have lost, but the Tug Boat Queens still feel strong
Mengwen Cao/KUT News

Water, the outdoors, music: all things Austinites enjoy, especially when the weather is nice. And all three can go well with some type of beverage in hand.

That was the case during this weekend’s Aqua Olympics. The fourth annual family/tattoo/dog-friendly event, presented by Fun Fun Fun Fest, took over Fiesta Gardens on Saturday afternoon. Events included classic outdoor games like a potato sack race, balloon toss and a ‘6-legged’ race. And, in typical Fun Fun Fun Fest fashion, there were activities like a paddleboard joust on Lady Bird Lake, a taco cannon, a belching contest, and a ‘lagoon launch’ where some of Austin’s best BMX bikers shot down a ramp, flew and flipped through the air, landing in the lake. For many, it could be considered a typical Austin afternoon.

Fun Fun Fun Fest: Staying True To Its Roots

Fun Fun Fun Fest prides itself on unexpected antics, seen here at the 2012 Festival

Fun Fun Fun Fest kicks off as at Auditorium Shores starting today.

The festival began eight years ago as a small music showcase in downtown Austin. Since then, it’s become one of the top independent festivals for music lovers. Known for its relaxed and creative atmosphere, the festival now includes comedy, action sports and flying tacos.

Given all it takes to put on a music festival, you wouldn’t expect as much laughter and humor from festival organizers, Transmission Events, this close to their event. But the vibe over at the temporary small east Austin office was anything but serious. It’s clear that fest creators like to have, well, fun.

“We had half-pipe diaper changing stations last year,” says Transmission and Fun Fun Fun Fest co-founder, James Moody. “They are all miniature half pipes. One time we tried to run the stats about how many black t-shirts are at our fest. I would say it’s 65 percent more than that of ACL Fest. I don’t know what it means but I know it’s true [laughing]. So, we could sit here for an hour and talk about all those little differences – it’s one big difference if you roll them all up.

In its second year at Auditorium Shores, Fun Fun Fun Fest took off. Now the City of Austin puts that growth at $27 million – the amount the fest is estimated to have pumped into Austin’s economy.

The mayor’s office announced Tuesday that the three-day underground music festival attracted a total north of 55,000 attendees. The $27 million estimate was provided by the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The seventh-annual Fun Fun Fun Fest came to a conclusion last night.

In its second year at Auditorium Shores, the underground music festival drew roughly 15,000 people a day, according to co-founder James Moody. The fest also received some unexpected mainstream coverage from outlets like “Good Morning America,” which reported on the fest’s Taco Cannon loaded with grub from Torchy’s Tacos. But as Moody told KUT News this weekend, “It’s growing, but it’ll never do well as a very big festival.”

Fun Fun Fun Fest Grows While Staying True to its Roots

Fun Fun Fun Fest describes itself as “the darling of independent festivals for music lovers and music makers.” But this year, with headliners like Run DMC and Girl Talk, is Fun Fun Fun Fest outgrowing its underground roots?

“It’ll never become super popular,” says James Moody, co-creator of the festival and owner of music venue The Mohawk. “It’s growing, but it’ll never do well as a very big festival.” That’s because Moody says they aren’t interested in billing big names.

Moody says they try to give attention to bands that aren’t as widely known, or inspire a small but devoted following. “We try to keep people on their toes and remind people that there are no genres anymore, so we don’t try to pigeon hole with our headlines,” Moody says. “We could throw a curveball and get The Cure next year or something.”

Austin City Council gave the green light today for Fun Fun Fun Fest to continue through Sunday when it opens the festival gates this November at Auditorium Shores. The resolution directs city staff to do three things:

  • Give Fun Fun Fun Fest organizers an extra day
  • Find a way to accommodate other events displaced by the closure of Waterloo Park
  • Develop a policy for charging a “mitigation fee” to events for park maintenance and upkeep

The 5th annual FunFunFunFest is set to kick off tonight at Waterloo Park. The weekend long festival is a smaller, more eccentric alternative to the Austin City Limits Music Festival, and while it primarily focuses on music, other activities ranging from professional wrestling to veggie hot dog eating contests to comedy acts give the event more of a rollicking, carnival-like feel than its heavily-sponsored big brother.
