UT System Tackles Issue of Growing Student Debt

On the agenda for Thursday morning's meeting of the University of Texas System Board of Regents is a discussion on a topic near and dear to the pocketbooks of many students and their parents: student loan debt.

With student loan debt now surpassing national credit card debt, part of UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa's framework for advancing excellence, which was approved in 2011, called for the formation of a task force to study the issue. The task force's report, which includes recommendations on how the system can help ease the burden on students, will be presented at Thursday's meeting.

Travis County's Bond Rating Reviewed By Moody's

Travis County's bond rating will go through a review for possible downgrade by Moody's Investors Service.

Travis County’s AAA bond rating could be downgraded by Moody’s Investors Service if the federal government’s rating is lowered as well. Moody’s Investors Service sent a warning Thursday to 177 public finance issuers that each would be “placed under review for possible downgrade the AAA ratings.” Nine Texas governments were included:

Greg Abbott Passes Financial Education Materials to UTSA

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott handed on Jan. 27 credit card and debt education materials to UTSA. Under a state law, Texas colleges and universities are required to educate their students about how to manage personal finances.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott relesed educational materials on to credit card and debt to the University of Texas at San Antonio.

The materials, created by the Attorney General’s Office, will be introduced during UTSA’s new student orientation.  In 2007, Texas lawmakers passed a law requiring state colleges and universities to educate students about managing personal finances and to prevent potential debt problems.
