Sales Tax Holiday Set for Second Weekend in August

The tax-free weekend could give Texans a $74 million break.

The state’s annual sales-tax-free weekend is a little earlier this year, but there’s still time to get ready.

Coming up on the weekend of August 9 to 11, Texas shoppers can save the sales tax on most clothing and back-to-school stuff priced under $100.

AISD Releases List of Schools Frozen to Transfers

The Austin Independent School District has released its list of schools that are frozen to transfers for the 2013-2014 school year.

Over two dozen campuses are  frozen to transfers, while another 17 will be reevaluated after requests for priority transfers are approved.

Beginning Jan. 7, parents will be able to submit their transfer requests by mail or in person at AISD's Office of Student Services.

Back-To-School Shoppers Open Wallets, But Carefully

After months of sitting on their wallets, Americans went shopping in July. The uptick reported Tuesday is boosting economists' hopes for a reasonably strong back-to-school season. And retailers are looking for clues about how the holiday shopping season will turn out later in the year.

"This is a good report," Chris Christopher, an economist with IHS Global Insight, a forecasting firm, wrote in an assessment of the latest report. "It indicates that consumers came back after hunkering down" during the year's first half when sales were "dismal."

Study: Nine Out of Ten Preschoolers' Lunches At Unsafe Temperatures

A University of Texas study found that 90 percent of bag lunches brought to school by preschool students were kept at temperatures that could result in food-borne illnesses.

The researchers took the temperatures of 700 preschoolers lunch's at nine different Texas child care centers. Forty-five percent of the lunches had at least one ice pack and 39 percent had none.

State Urges Parents To Seek Regulated Day Cares

There are more than 25,000 daycare operations and homes in the state of Texas.  And as the school year looms, parents have to choose among them to find safe child care that's a good fit for their family's needs.  But a warning from the state: be careful when choosing; 524 Texas operations have been found guilty of abuse or neglect.
