Speed Skater Jordan Malone Only Texan to Medal at Sochi

Four Texans represented Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, but only one athlete came back with a medal.

Denton native Jordan Malone clinched the silver in the speed skating 5,000-meter relay along with teammates, J.R. Celski, Chris Creveling and Eduardo Alvarez on Friday. The team finished behind Russia.

Four Texas Athletes Representing U.S. in Sochi Games

The Winter Olympics kick off in the Russian city of Sochi – and Texans will have four homegrown athletes to cheer for.

San Antonio's Justin Olsen and McKinney, Texas' Johnny Quinn are competing in two-man and four-man bobsled events. Houston's Jonathan Garcia is competing in the long track, 1000-meter speed skating event. And Denton, Texas' Jordan Malone Malone will race in speed skating's short track 500-meter and 1,500-meter competitions, and its 5,000-meter relay event.

Austin ISD Names New Athletic Director

Leal Anderson, AISD's new athletic director, comes to the district from Anderson High School.

The Austin Independent School District has a new athletic director. Leal Anderson will oversee AISD sports programs that involve more than 14,000 students. Anderson says part of his mission is improving the academic success of students through the character development that happens in athletics.

"I think graduation will increase," Anderson said at a media availability Tuesday." I think the numbers of enrollment will also increase. We'll also have less students dropping out. Those are things that I think are really important, that will help. And that's what I look forward to doing."
