Tropical System Gathering in Gulf Could Bring Rain to Austin

A tropical system is developing in the Gulf of Mexico that could have an affect on Austin weather in the days ahead.

Aaron Treadway, a forecaster at the National Weather Service, says computer models have been "all over the place" in recent days – but data now suggests the system’s heading toward the Texas coast, somewhere from Northern Mexico to Louisiana.

“Keeping an eye on the Gulf here in Central Texas – and really anywhere along the Texas coast – is never a bad idea. Because even if this makes landfall south of Brownsville into Mexico, it could still bring us some moisture for rain here in the Central Texas area.”

The National Hurricane Center gives the system a 60 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone in the next several days. If it makes landfall to Austin’s south, it could mean quite a bit of rain in our area – which could happen sometime in the first half of next week.
