Free flu shot clinics in Travis County will open up starting on Wednesday.

It's Flu Shot Time Again...

The Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department is offering free flu shots for people who are uninsured, underinsured or on Medicare. Some of the flu clinics allow walk-ins others are by appointment only. 

The first clinic is tomorrow at Givens Park on East 12th Street from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. No appointment is needed and there will also be a drive-thru clinic for those on the go. You can find dates and times for upcoming flu clinics here.

Sen. Watson: "It's Time for a Medical School"

State Senator Kirk Watson is speaking to the Real Estate Council of Austin today to drum up support for a medical school in Austin. It's something people have been talking about for years. Sen. Watson told the Austin American-Statesman he will unveil some plans today:

State Sen. Kirk Watson today will outline an ambitious plan to establish a medical school, a teaching hospital, a series of neighborhood clinics and a health-related research institute in Austin. "I'm going to lay out 10 goals for the next 10 years and, in addition, lay out an initial organizing committee — a group of people in a position to help make sure that this happens," Watson, D-Austin, told the American-Statesman on Monday. "Every 't' hasn't been crossed, and every 'i' hasn't been dotted, but it's time to go from incremental to transformational."  

FEMA in Leander

FEMA has opened a disaster recovery assistance center in Williamson County. This is for people affected by the Moonglow fire in Leander. Residents can meet face to face with representatives from the state, FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration at the Leander Public Library. Here's more info:

Property Tax Rate Could Increase in Travis County

Travis County Commissioners are holding a public hearingtoday on a proposed tax rate increase for 2012. If commissioners adopt the proposed tax rate, the average homeowner would pay an additional $33 a year.

The tax rate is one item on a list of public hearings starting at 9 a.m. in the Commissioners Courtroom in the Ned Granger Building on 314 West 11th Street.
