Fort Hood Marks Anniversary of Shootings

Fort Hood is holding ceremonies todayto mark the one-year anniversary of the shootings on post last year.  A private award ceremony will start at 10:00 a.m. to recognize soldiers and civilians who Army commanders say went above and beyond the call of duty that day. 

At 1:00 p.m., a remembrance ceremony will be held to pay tribute to the 13 people killed in the mass shooting.  That ceremony is open to the public.  Fort Hood will also host a series of runs called "Run to Remember" Saturday to honor the fallen.

KUT's Nathan Bernier recently spoke to the daughterof one of the victims,  65-year-old Mike Cahill.

"Of course the first year of any grief is hard, so you just have to get through the holidays and you have to get through their birthday, and you have to get through Father's Day and you have to get through all those things. And you know I have great things that have happened in my life and I can't call dad," said Kerry Cahill .

 Court: Judge Keller Cannot Recoup Legal Costs

Taxpayers won't have to pay legal costs for Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Presiding Judge Sharon Keller.  A special court of review last month said Keller could recoup legal costs. But The Associated Press reportsthe review court  amended that order and deleted the costs reference. 

The Austin-American Statesman reports state law specifies legal fees cannot be awarded in judicial conduct proceedings .  Judge Keller is the judge who was accused of closing her courtroom at 5:00 p.m. the day a death row inmate's lawyers were trying to file a last minute appeal to stop their client's execution.

Gov. Rick Perry Pushes New Book 'Fed Up'

People across the country heard Texas Governor Rick Perry talk about his new book Fed Up! Our Fight to Save America from Washington during "Morning Edition" today.   

Gov. Perry told NPR's Steve Inskeep states should be free to make thier own decisions.

"If you want to live in a state that has high taxes, high regulations — that is favorable to smoking marijuana and gay marriage — then move to California," said Perry. "[In Texas] we still believe in freedom, freedom from over-taxation, over-regulation, over-litigation."

Perry was just re-elected Tuesday to a record third four-year term as governor.

The Zilker Holiday Tree Festival 2010 Set

Thanksgiving isn't for another three weeks, but the City of Austin has released it's schedule for the annual Zilker Holiday Tree festival.  The official tree-lighting ceremony will be December 5th.   

Throughout December, choir groups, dance teams, and local musicians will perform at the Zilker Hillside Theatre across from Barton Springs Pool.  There will not be a Trail of Lightsthis year.

Fun Fun Fun Fest This Weekend

The 5th annual Fun Fun Fun Fest music festival kicks off today at Waterloo Park.  The self-proclaimed underground festival features the latest in the punk/hardcore, indie rock, and hip hop/DJ scenes.  You can check out the festival line-up here
