ACC Board Announces 3 Finalists for President

The Austin Community College District Board of Trustees selected three finalists on Monday night to replace retiring President and CEO, Dr. Stephen B. Kinslow.

The finalists are:

  • Dr. Donald Doucette, the senior vice president and provost of Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Dr. Katherine Persson, the Lone Star College-Kingwood President, of the Lone Star College System in The Woodlands, Texas
  • Dr. Richard Rhodes, president of El Paso Community College

The finalists will visit ACC April 4 through 6 to take part in public forums. The Board is expected to announce the new president in May.
AISD Drops Incentive Proposal

The Austin Independent School District’s Board has dropped a proposal to offer employees incentives to voluntarily resign.  The superintendent recommended against the incentives at a special meeting last night.  District officials said AISD could have been responsible for unemployment benefits on top of the cash incentives. AISD is trying to reduce its workforce to help close a projected $94 million budget deficit.

Quintana Sentenced to Probation for DWI

Former Austin police officer Leonardo Quintana was sentenced on Monday to a year of probationand a $400 fine for a January 2010 DWI charge.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo fired Quintana over the DWI, but Quintana was reinstated in October.  Shortly after, Acevedo fired Quintana a second time following information on a domestic dispute.  Quintana is trying to get his job back again; the results of his second arbitration hearing are pending.

Quintana is the officer involved in the 2009 fatal shooting of 18-year-old Nathaniel Sanders. He was not indicted for the shooting.
