The State of Texas executed a Mexican citizen Thursday night for the murder of a San Antonio teen.

Humberto Leal Executed

Texas executed Mexican citizen Humberto Leallast night.  The U.S. Supreme Court yesterday rejected appeals, backed by the Obama Administration, to delay the execution to give Congress time to work on legislation covering cases like this. 

Lawyers argued Leal wasn’t told he could seek legal help from the Mexican government when he was arrested.  Leal was put to death for the rape-slaying of 16 year-old Adria Sauceda in 1994 in San Antonio. You can read more of KUT's coverage on the case here.

Lake Travis ISD Superintendent Resigns

The Lake Travis ISD Board has announced Superintendent Donald Rockwell 'Rocky' Kirk is resigningeffective July 31st.  Kirk told the Board he's leaving for personal reasons. He's served as the head of LTISD since 2002.

Here are some comments from Board president Jason Buddin:

"Accepting Dr. Kirk’s resignation is difficult to do," said Mr. Buddin. "However, the Board has come to an agreement with Dr. Kirk, one which he and the Board believe is in our respective best interests and is in the best interest of the District. Dr. Kirk has been an incredible leader and ambassador for us. During his tenure here, the District experienced unprecedented growth and success, both in and out of the classroom.   

The Board is expected to appoint an interim superintendent at a specially called meeting Monday.

The Davis Cup in Austin Starts Today

Expect extra traffic around the Frank Erwin Center starting today through Sunday. The U.S. and Spain will be taking the court there. The two are hoping to break out of this Davis Cupquarterfinal tie. The Austin American -Statesman has a piece today about how Austin's Andy Roddick became inspired to follow his tennis dreams:

Andy Roddick expected tennis when he sat down to watch the Davis Cup for the first time in his life. But his 9-year-old eyes took in so much more. Roddick saw fire. He saw desperation. He saw drama and energy and a kind of selfless motivation for winning that he'd never yet felt himself. "It's just been with me ever since," Roddick said. 

Rio Grande & 24th Street Closing this Weekend

Starting at 9 a.m. the intersection of Rio Grande and 24th Streets will be closed. The city will be doing some construction work at that intersection. It's scheduled to reopen by 6 a.m. Monday. The construction is part of the city's Rio Grande Street Reconstruction Project, which started in October 2010.
