Tropical Storm Don May Bring Austin Rain
Central Texas may soon get some relief from the hot and dry weather. Tropical Storm Don is expected to make landfall late tomorrow night or early Saturday near Corpus Christi. Austin has a 30 percent chance for rain tomorrow, but YNN Chief Meteorologist Burton Fitzsimmons says our best chance is on Saturday.
Futurecast shows the best opportunity for rain coming by noon Saturday when Don's expected to be near San Antonio, just to our southwest. By the time we get to Saturday night, our in-house "Future Rain" model shows some parts of Central Texas could receive more than 1.5" of rain!
Firefighters Monitoring Hot Spots in Western Travis Fire
Fire crews have been working overnight on hot spots from a brush firein western Travis County. Families evacuated from the Belvedere subdivision, off Hamilton Pool Road, were not allowed to return home last night. The fire started yesterday afternoon and at last count had burned 600 acres. Firefighters believe the fire was caused by someone welding outside. No homes were lost.
Lake Travis Fire Rescue says it will decide this morning when people can return home. Yesterday afternoon families had gathered at a community center where the Red Cross of Central Texas was giving out water and snacks. The Red Cross told KUT it helped escort people to their homes to get their medications and pets.
Opening Statements Today in Warren Jeffs Trial
Opening statements are expected to start today in polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs' trial in San Angelo. He is charged with sexually assaulting two girls. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison. From the Associated Press:
