AP: Warren Jeffs in a Coma
The Associated Pressreports convicted polygamist religious leader Warren Jeffs is in a coma following complications from fasting. A source told the AP the coma was medically induced.
The 55-year-old head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was expected to survive, an official familiar with Jeffs' medical condition told The Associated Press. It was not clear how long Jeffs — who has a history of refusing to eat while incarcerated — would remain in the coma or how long he would be hospitalized, the official said.
Jeffs was recently sentenced to life behind bars for sexually assaulting two underage girls he was in so-called spiritual marriages with.
Texas A&M Leaving the Big 12?
The New York Times is reporting Texas A&M is closer to withdrawing from the Big 12.
Texas A&M’s departure from the Big 12 Conference drew closer to reality on Monday when the university’s president, R. Bowen Loftin, sent a letter to the Big 12 board chairman, the Missouri chancellor Brady Deaton, notifying the league that the Aggies would formally withdraw — very likely on Tuesday — according to two college officials with direct knowledge of the decision
The Aggies are trying to join the Southeastern Conference. They would have to pay the Big 12 a hefty fine to do so.
Benson Gets 20 Day Jail Sentence
Former Longhorn football player Cedric Benson pleaded no contest Monday to a misdemeanor assault charge and was sentenced to 20 days in jail for allegedly punching a downtown bar worker. KVUEhas more details:
Benson is second on the University of Texas' all-time rushing list and is currently a member of the Cincinnati Bengals. Benson was scheduled for trial at 2 p.m. Monday. The court even picked a jury. However, just as the trial was set to start, all parties met in private and struck a deal. Benson entered a plea of no contest and agreed to serve 20 days in jail and pay a fine of $4,000. Benson told Travis County Judge Nancy Hohengartent that he will report to jail on Oct. 17. That is a bye week for the Bengals.
Austin Keeps Breaking Heat Records
Monday Camp Mabry reached 109 beating the previous daily record of 103. A heat advisory is in effect for Central Texas until nine tonight. High temperatures are expected to reach 105. If that happens, we would hit the record for the most days in a calendar year with temperatures at or above 105.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texassays Texans could hit a new record for electricity use today. ERCOT officials are continuing to ask people to conserve energy from three in the afternoon until seven at night.
