Top Morning Stories 12/27/11: Final Stretch in Iowa, AFD Searching for Arson Suspect

The Final Stretch in Iowa

There's just one week to go until the Iowa Republican presidential caucuses. An average of recent polls shows Texas Congressman Ron Paul leading the field of GOP candidates in Iowa. Governor Rick Perry comes in at fourth place. Perry will continue trying to win over voters, as he resumes his bus tour of Iowa this week.

Perry Dominates Most-Read Trib Stories

KUT's political reporting partner, The Texas Tribune, just released its list of the most-read stories for 2011. No surprise, articles about Governor Perry got some of the highest numbers of page views:

With our governor jumping into the GOP presidential fray in August, stories about Gov. Rick Perry quickly and definitively became the most popular on the Trib site. And he didn't fail to provide excellent material. Seven of the 10 most-read stories this year are about Perry — his politics, his past and his policy stances.

AFD Searching for Arson Suspect

Investigators are looking for a suspect in the party boat fire at Lady Bird Lake Sunday. The Austin Fire Department suspects arson and is looking for an African-American man seen in the area. He's in his mid-30s and was wearing a denim jacket with a khaki hood.

AFD says it’s waiting on the boat owners’ insurance company before taking a closer look at the boat. Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 974-0240.

Libraries, Rec Centers Back Open

After the holiday break, City of Austin recreation and senior centers are re-opening today. City halls and other city offices also re-open today.
