Jeff Heimsath for KUT News

An Austin Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty was honored Monday in the Texas House of Representatives. Jaime Padron was shot to death in April 2012 when he responded to a disturbance call at a Walmart on I-35 near Parmer Lane.

State Representative DawnnaDukes, D-Austin, filed House Concurrent Resolution 85. It was passed unanimously aftera ceremony at the Capitol to honor all 25 Texas police officers killed in the last two years.

“Because of his heroic efforts at that Wal-Mart right around the corner from my house that I had been in just the day before, many people’s lives were saved," Dukes said on the House floor, surrounded by members of Austin's legislative delegation.

Padron was shot while trying to restrain a man. Shortly before he died, he called for backup. Two Walmart employees held down the shooter until more police arrived.

25-year-old Brandon Daniel is charged with capital murder in the death. Travis County prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty.
