Some Austin Latinos spoke out against AISD’s proposal for an in-district carter school managed by IDEA public schools. YNN Austin reports that,
Activists gathered Saturday to call for IDEA Charter's CEO to withdraw his proposal and to send a message to the school board. "They are supposed to be administering quality public education for our students. If they can't do that then they need to go. They need to turn in their resignations," one demonstrator said. "If Carstarphen thinks that is such a good idea then maybe they will hire her over there, because we no longer need her services here in Austin,” demonstrator Janie Rangel said. The school board now plans to take up the vote on the in-district charter plan on Monday.
Environmentalists also protested in Austin Saturday to remind Democrats in Washington that not everyone’s on board with trading payroll tax breaks for an oil pipeline through the state.
TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipeline “will raise gas prices and kill jobs,” according to Public Citizen’s Texas office. But the Republican-dominated Congress argues the nearly $8 billion dollar pipeline will bring jobs and much needed energy independence to the states through which the pipeline passes, including Texas.
Texas Governor Rick Perry continues his bus tour through Iowa today, trying to make a last-minute appeal to voters in the nation’s first 2012 electoral test. The Iowa caucuses are the first week in January.
