Flash Flood Watch for Central Texas
Rain--honest-to-goodness rain--is falling across Central Texas this morning. The first significant precipitation in months, however, isn't coming without a penalty. Ground parched for nearly a year is having trouble handling all the water. What doesn't soak in is running off That's enough for the National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the region until 6:00 p.m. Sunday. Showers and thunder stay in the forecast through at least Monday morning.
Sooners Swamp Longhorns
Oklahoma beat Texas in the annual Red River Rivalry game at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas yesterday, 55-17. The loss is the first for the Longhorns in five games this season, while Oklahoma remains unbeaten. Yesterday's result will also likely move Texas out of the top-10 in the USA Today college football poll, one of the components of the complicated formula to choose a national college football champion. The undefeated Sooners will probably hold on to their number-one ranking.
Perry Campaigns in Iowa, Paul Wins DC Straw Poll
Governor Rick Perry's presidential campaign rolled back into Iowa Saturday. But our political reporting partner, the Texas Tribune, writes that voters in the home of the first-in-the-nation presidential caucus weren't entirely sold on Perry's more focused answers. But the message didn't reach delegates to the Value Voters Summit in Washington, DC. Texas Congressman Ron Paul took 37 percent of the vote. Perry finished in a fourth-place tie with Minnesota Congresswoman Michelle Bachman.
