You know what they say, if you don't like the weather in Texas...just wait a minute. After 72-hours below freezing in Austin, we got into the upper 60's Saturday with another nice day ahead today. BUT, we've got freezing temperatures and rain (or sleet or whatever) in the forecast this week. So, don't pack your heavy coats yet.
On to the news of the day:
Texas Governor Rick Perry delivers his state-of-the-state address Tuesday. The speech has traditionally been used by governors a springboard for their legislative agenda. The Austin American Statesman's Jason Embry has an article today on what could be in this year's speech and how it could be received by the legislature in a tough budget year.
School districts across Texas are expecting billions in budget cuts from the state this year. Many districts, including the Austin Independent School District, are debating plans to layoff teachers and even close schools. The Texas Tribune's Morgan Smith has a story in today's New York Times profiling one West Texas school district that is trying to stay alive with only 56 students in the entire district.
And if you didn't know, today is the Superbowl in Dallas. The Pittsburg Steelers and Green Bay Packers will face off tonight. I hope you have a good party to go to, even if you don't care who wins.
And the Texas Longhorns men's basketball team keep rolling in Big-12 play. The Longhorns won their 8th straight league game Saturday against Texas Tech. The team is now 20-3 on the season and ranked #3 in the country.
