Kids are playing in the snow in El Paso and other parts of the state, as a storm system pushes eastward into Texas. People are posting video of the snow to YouTube.
Snow in El Paso isn’t expected to stop until midnight, the El Paso Timesreports, bringing three to six inches to the area by Saturday morning.
While snow isn’t expected in Austin, it could come as close as western parts of the Hill Country. A mix of light rain, snow and sleet could hit western Gillespie, Val Verde and Edwards counties, the according to the San Antonio Express-News.
But it will get cold overnight in the Capital City. The National Weather Service says the temperature will drop to 40 degrees overnight with winds of 10 miles per hour. Tomorrow’s weather is expected to be similar to today’s, except there will be a 70 percent chance of precipitation Saturday night.
Christmas Day should warm up to around 54 degrees, the NWS says, with a 20 percent chance of rain.
Earlier this week, a family from League City, Texas was rescued from their snow-covered car in New Mexico. They spent two days trapped in the vehicle under feet of snow, the Houston Chronicle reports. The family used their cell phones to dial 911.
"We became encased in a vehicle igloo," David Higgins told the Chronicle. "You could roll the window down and it just slid down, and you could touch it, and it was solid. So I rolled the window back up, and we kind of just looked at each other - me and my wife - and tried to keep my daughter calm."
