AISD Seeks Budget Input

The Austin Independent School District will take public comment on next year's budget at a meeting tonight at AISD headquarters.  The Austin American-Statesman reports that the district could be as much as $60 million short in revenues for the 2011-2012 school year.  Budget writers expect to present the proposed plan at the end of February.

Fireworks Go On Sale Today

The winter fireworks sales season kicks off today, amid fairly dry conditions and few prospects for rain between now and New Year's Day.  The Texas Pyrotechnics Association told Travis County Commissioners last week that they're voluntarily banning the sale of most flying fireworks, in light of the increased fire danger.

Appliance Rebate Program Kicks Off

The office of the Texas Comptroller is launching another appliance rebate program today.  The program allows people buying certain Energy STAR-qualifying appliances to apply for state rebates.  This program, unlike last spring's phone and internet-based application program, will rely on customers mailing in receipts in order to receive rebates ranging from $40 to $1,000, depending on the appliance.
