March 25th: A History of Hail in Austin

This Monday, March 25, has a date with a dark recent history here in the Austin area. The last three major hail storms we’ve had all have been on March 25, in 1993, 2005 and 2009.

“It is kind of unusual that three of the costliest storms have occurred on that individual date,” says Mark Hanna of the Insurance Council of Texas

Hanna heard about this phenomenon from Paul Yura of the National Weather Service, who suggested March 25  should be “clean out your garage day,” so there’s a place to put your car if there is hail in the stormy season ahead for Central Texas – typically mid Spring.

“April and May are our worst months and we can only hope that we get some good thunderstorms that drop a lot of rainfall, but we could do without the hail,” Hanna said.

It looks like we will do without the hail this March 25. The Weather Service forecast for Monday is mostly sunny, with highs in the 60s.
