A federal court in Houston found Dereon Kelley guilty in last year’s bomb hoax at Texas State University.
The 22-year-old Bryan man was convicted on three counts of using the Internet for a false bomb threat to intimidate people at the university.
Texas State Police originally charged student Brittany Henderson, Kelley’s ex-girlfriend, for the bomb threat. But Hays County dropped the charges against the former student for lack of evidence.
The trial evidence showed that Kelley hacked Henderson’s account to send threatening emails to the university’s admissions office.
Dereon Kelley faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.
At the same time, police at the University of Texas at Austin are investigating what they're calling a non-credible bomb threat. UT’s police department is increasing police presence on campus for the next few days, but classes and other activities will continue as scheduled.
