Looking Back: When The Drag Wasn't Such a Drag

Today's Wayback Wednesday takes a look back at Guadalupe Street, before it was awash in the glow of stop lights and rush hour brake lights.

As KUT's Terrence Henry reported this morning, the city's looking to clean up the oft-congested roadway in a project that, once it's finalized, will likely take years to complete. Above is a photo retrospective of "The Drag," collecting images from its earliest days as UT-Austin's main thoroughfare — before the iconic UT Tower had even been built — to the heady days of the 1970s, with images courtesy of the Austin History Center.

Andrew Weber is a general assignment reporter for KUT, focusing on criminal justice, policing, courts and homelessness in Austin and Travis County. Got a tip? You can email him at aweber@kut.org. Follow him on Twitter @England_Weber.
