One of the largest employers in the Austin area is shedding a "limited" number of jobs.
According to company spokesperson David Frink, the layoffs affected people in Central Texas and around the world. Dell employs about 14,000 people in the region, mostly at its corporate headquarters in Round Rock.
Dell would not say exactly how many employees were affected or at which locations they were employed, but the company says it is offering severance packages. Frink says it continues to "hire for a variety of skill sets as we invest in additional engineering, technology solutions and enterprise sales capabilities."
The job cuts come after Dell last week reported a 72 percent drop in second-quarter profits. Company shareholders are scheduled to vote September 12 on a buyout offer from founder Michael Dell. The offer values Dell Inc. at almost $25 billion.
