The Lead: AISD Approves Single-Sex Schools, Perry to Give 'State of the State', UT Cost-Cutting
Good morning! The Austin area will see highs in the upper-80s this afternoon. The National Weather Service has also issued a Red Flag Warning from 3 p.m. today through 3 p.m. Wednesday. The humidity will be low and the winds could gust up to 30 miles per hour—leading to higher wildfire danger. At the same time, there’s a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms.
Lead Story: The Austin Independent School District Board voted last night to add three single-sex schools to the district.
Two struggling east Austin middle schools—Pearce and Garcia will become single-sex schools in the 2014-2015 school year. The board also approved adding a School for Young Men—similar to the Ann Richards School for Young Women. The plan has already received financial support from the Moody Foundation.
Gov. Perry's State of the State: Gov. Rick Perry will deliver his seventh State of the State speech this morning. The speech will outline Perry's strategies for the 83rd Texas Legislative Session and what he hopes to accomplish with lawmakers.
During a speech at the Capitol over the weekend, Perry said he we would like to cement Texas as the “most pro-family, pro-life and pro-values state in the nation.”
The speech is at 11 a.m. in the House Chamber of the Texas State Capitol.
KUT will air the speech live.
UT's Efficiency Report: University of Texas at Austin President Bill Powers will present recommendations this morning for cutting costs at UT.
The recommendations came from a panel of business leaders and come after Texas lawmakers cut nearly $1 billion dollars from higher education last legislative session.
Powers will make the address at 10 a.m. in the AVAYA Auditorium of the ACES Building at Speedway and 24th St.
It will also be streamed online.
