Hurricane Season Begins

Hurricane season officially starts Saturday, June 1, and Texas leaders are calling on Texans to be prepared.

Emergency response agencies staged their annual hurricane exercise Friday at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Governor Rick Perry was there, thanking responders like Texas Task Force 1, the search and rescue experts whose “regular” jobs are with organizations like the Austin Fire Department.

They’ve been busy recently in places like Moore, Oklahoma.

“The finest emergency management people in America are standing within a 150-yard radius of where we are right now. I’m really proud to get to work with ‘em,” Perry said.

The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration is expecting an unusually active hurricane season, but that may or may not include the Texas Gulf Coast.

The last hurricane to hit Texas was Ike in 2008.
