Gov. Perry Lags Behind in Tea Party 2012 Straw Poll

The Houston Chronicle is reporting that Governor Rick Perry didn't fair very well in a Presidential straw poll taken over the weekend at a Tea Party event in Arizona.

The Tea Party Patriots American Policy Summit was held in Phoenix over the weekend.  It was actually a two step poll.  One was a live vote.  The other an online vote.  Governor Perry didn't do well in either poll.  His high mark was 1.82% in the live poll.  Online he only got 1.01%   Radio talk show host Herman Cain won the live vote.  Former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty took 2nd place, about 5% back of Cain.  Texas Congressman Ron Paul was 3rd in the live vote but blew away the field in winning the online poll with 49% of the vote.  Cain took 2nd place with 12% of the vote.

Texas Monthly's Paul Burka had a couple of interesting points on the vote.

  1. He doesn't think the Tea Party or any group will be relevent in the 2012 election with Herman Cain or Ron Paul as their lead candidate.
  2. He continues to think Governor Perry is considering a run as either President or Vice-President no matter what the polls say.
