The family-friendly New Year’s Eve celebration known as “First Night Austin” is no more, at least for the time being. Dewy Brooks, the group's president for the non-profit organization, says that funding was the main issue for the decision.
“First Night Austin” began in 2005 and brought thousands to downtown Austin. The event was a celebration of arts and culture and was an alternative to alcoholic festivities. A city spokesperson says they’re saddened to hear of "First Night Austin's" fate, and that officials are keeping their options open for another Austin-backed New Year’s Eve celebration this December 31.
