More than 200 authors and about 40,000 book fans will descend on the Texas Capitol October 26-27 for the 2013 Texas Book Festival. Throughout the year KUT News speaks with authors about their lives and their work. To celebrate the upcoming festival, we have collected some of those interviews here. From 9-11 to Scientology to the Kennedy assassination, it's a diverse set of works from a fascinating group of authors.

Donna DeCesare's Unsettling Portraits of Children of War

Update: Donna DeCesare is one of four gold medal winners of the 2013 Maria Moors Cabot prize, awarded by the Columbia Journalism School for outstanding reporting on Latin America and the Caribbean. “The Cabot Prize honors journalists who have covered the Western Hemisphere and, through their reporting and editorial work, have furthered inter-American understanding,” reads a statement on the journalism school’s website.

You can see more of DeCesare’s work on her website.

Original story (April 25): Tonight the University of Texas Press will host a gallery opening of Donna DeCesare's photography, along with a reading and signing of her new book "Unsettled: Children in a World of Gangs" at the Netty Lee Benson Latin American Collection in Sid Richardson Hall from 6 to 8 p.m.

DeCesare's work in "Unsettled" combines nearly 150 photos that focus on youth enmeshed in drug violence in the United States and Central America.

I really wanted people to feel troubled by this history, because it’s so easy to forget; we see the statistics about this or that, and we think we kind of understand it all, and this is bad and this is good. And there’s all these kids who are trapped in the middle, and they don’t have any choices.

The author spoke with KUT's Emily Donahue about her 30-plus year career covering drug wars and gang violence.

Emily Donahue is a former grants writer for KUT. She previously served as news director and helped launch KUT’s news department in 2001.
