A Day in the Life of a KUT Reporter

Filipa Rodrigues for KUT

Each morning KUT News reporters meet to discuss the news of the day and determine which stories are impacting civic life in Central Texas. Then, the reporter is off to conduct interviews, record sound and gather background information.

When education reporter Kate McGee reports on the Austin Independent School District she talks with AISD employees on the phone followed by a visit to AISD headquarters or a school campus to learn more and capture photos and audio.

Then, she comes back to the station to put the story together. She has to listen to all the interviews she recorded and find the quotes that will tell the story. Then, she writes her script – the part that she will actually say. Finally, she combines the interviews with her own voice to produce a first draft of a story, which is then put through the editing process before being finalized for air.

Your donation today will enable Kate to continue doing her job. It will pay for the batteries in her recorder and the microphone that she uses while talking to an interview subject. Whether you are making your first-ever donation or increasing your sustaining donation, please know that Kate, the KUT Newsroom and the entire staff appreciate your generosity.
