Davis Cup Tennis, Anyone?
Some of the world's greatest men's tennis stars will be in Central Texas this summer as Austin plays host to a Davis Cup quarterfinal match between the U.S. and Spain.
The matches will be held at the Frank Erwin Center the weekend of July 8-10, the weekend after the prestigious Wimbledon tennis championships end.
The Davis Cup began in 1900 as a match between men's tennis players - two singles players and a double combination - from the U.S. and Great Britain. (The U.S. won, incidentally.)
In the years since, the Davis Cup has grown to over 125 nations competing for the cup. Spain has won the Davis Cup four times since 2000. They will probably be led by Rafael Nadal, the top-ranked men's singles tennis player in the world. The U.S. has won the Cup 32 times, most recently in 2007.
