City Kicks Off 'Welcome to Austin' Orientation Session

KUT News

The City of Austin has started a new program to welcome foreigners moving to town.

The Welcome to Austin program provides language resources, offers local advice and teaches newcomers how to navigate the city's local schools, law enforcement and public transportation. Here's a look at the agenda.

"What we found was a lot of the immigrants would become victims of robbery because they would carry all their money with them," says Jason Huskins with the Austin Police Department. "And things like that are what we want to cover to help prevent them from becoming victims. You can trust banks here."

The program also matches up foreigners with a local “ambassador” who can provide a background on the intangibles of Austin’s communities, politics and government.

The Welcome to Austin program begins at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 26, at Austin City Hall, 301 W. Second St.
