Brownout poses after performing in studio at KUTX last month.

The staff at our sister station KUTX scour the earth to bring listeners the best music. Each Friday, they share three of their favorite songs on Morning Edition

"Louder Than A Bomb" by Brownout

The new album from Austin's Brownout, Fear Of A Brown Planet, features instrumental covers of songs by Public Enemy. "Louder Than A Bomb," which is one of my favorite Public Enemy tunes, has a 35-second intro before Brownout drops into a devastatingly funky groove that sets the tone for the whole album.

"Nont For Sale" by Sudan Archives

Sudan Archives is a violinist and singer who, when studying classical music, was turned on to East African violinists. On "Nont For Sale," she mixes sultry R&B and some hip-hop with electronic beats, but it's that subtle addition of her strings that gives this song a special something.

"War Paint" by Frankie Simone

Finally, music from Frankie Simone, a pop singer based in Portland, Ore. "War Paint" is all about empowerment; it's a response to the disrespect she and members of the LGBTQ community have experienced, primarily online. It's also got an infectious, tribal beat that I find irresistible.
