Austin Tops List of "Turnaround Towns"

We pretty much know we're awesome, but it's nice to hear it again and again. Austin made third place on CNN Money's list of "Ten Top Turnaround Towns". We even beat out Dallas, which ranked eighth.

CNN Money said Austin has solid job growth, a relatively laissez-faire economy, and plenty of space to expand.

Those factors have kept home prices in check despite a rapid increase in demand caused by a large influx of new residents. Since Austin prices never soared toward the sun, they have never fallen back again either: Prices are only down about 2% from peak. The area has a big tech industry presence, particularly Dell, and a well-educated and well-paid work force associated with the massive University of Texas campus. Its pleasant location on the edge of the Texas Hill Country is also a draw for new residents.

Here are the ten cities on the list with links to their profiles.

  1. San Diego
  2. Los Angeles
  3. Austin
  4. Boston
  5. Colorado Springs, Colo.
  6. Fort Myers, Fla
  7. Buffalo
  8. Dallas
  9. Philadelphia
  10. Washington DC
