Vote Anywhere During November's Presidential Election?
The Travis County Commissioners are meeting this morning to talk about using vote centers for the November 2012 Presidential election.
Travis County Clerk Dana DeBeauvoir says vote centers, or countywide polling places, give all registered Travis County voters the option to vote at any polling location in the county on election day. Right now, that’s only allowed during early voting.DeBeauvoir says this system is more convenient for voters and eliminates some confusion.
During a public hearing last month, some expressed concerns about whether vote centers would increase the opportunity for voter fraud and whether the system would save the county money.
The Commissioners Court is meeting at 9 a.m. at the Travis County Administration Building.
Eliminating Texas 'Food Deserts'
Texas lawmakers from two House of Representatives committees are coming together this morning to talk about ways to reduce food insecurity and increase access to healthy foods.
The House Committee on Human Services and the House Committee on Public Health will look at what’s been done across Texas and in other states to eliminate so-called “food deserts”— those communities without ready access to a grocery store with a good, affordable supply of fresh, healthy food.
They’ll also consider ways to encourage urban farming and farmers’ markets.
Ten Austin High Schools Make the Grade
Ten Austin-area public high schools are among the top 1,000 best in the country. That’s according to a new list compiled by Newsweek. The list focuses on the schools best at turning out college-ready graduates.
Dallas had 28 of the top schools and Houston had 30.
Liberal Arts and Science Academy (#38) and Westwood (#95) were the only two schools listed in the top 100.

Correction: Westlake Academy ranked #18 on the list and was originally identified as being in the Austin area. According to the Town of Westlake, Westlake Academy is the only municipally owned public, charter school in the State of Texas. Westlake Academy is located in the Town of Westlake, Tarrant County.
