35,000 Local Children Will Get Free Coats Tomorrow

The annual Coats For Kids Program reports a record breaking number of donations this year. More than 35,000 coats will be distributed to low income children tomorrow at the Palmer Events Center.

All the coats are new or gently used.

All children under 18 who show up between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. will receive a coat as long as their parents can present "proof of need." That includes a document showing enrollment in free/reduced lunch program, a WIC card, a CHIP card, a Medicaid card, a Lone Star debit card, a Social Security Income (SSI) card, a or current pay stub.

Who are the nice people behind this charitable event? Besides all the generous people who donated coats, the event is sponsored by The Junior League of Austin, Jack Brown Cleaners, KASE 101 and KVUE.

Here's what it looked like at last year's distribution.
