June 14 is the City of Austin’s run off election. Voters will choose between Cid Galindo and Laura Morrison for council place four. The Manor Independent School District Board Election is also on Saturday. That election was postponed in May because of a ballot error. Travis County Clerk Dana DeBeauvoir is reminding voters to double check their polling locations. DeBeauvoir said the county’s trying to save tax dollars by reducing the number of locations.

Austin Weekend Street Closures

The first major closure will be Friday, June 13 for the Republic of Texas Motorcycle Rally Parade along Congress Avenue starting at 7:30 p.m. Streets will be closed between 2nd and 11th Streets between Brazos and Colorado. Streets from 6 pm to 3 am Saturday. Saturday, June 14 the Peace of Mind 5k will close Congress Ave. from 1700 to 1800 blocks. From there race takes runners along MLK to Guadalupe, to Dean Keaton, to Red River, 15th and back to congress. Streets will reopen by 11 am Also Saturday, June 14 the Austin Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce Pride Parade will take place from South 1st Bridge north to the Fourth Street Warehouse district. The South 1st Bridge, Lavaca to Cesar Chavez and Fourth and Fifth streets between Guadalupe and Congress will be closed between 8 pm and 11 pm.
Renaming Johnston High School

But that history is about to go up in smoke because of a state mandated closure that requires the Austin school district to change the school's title. Some East Austin residents are trying to figure out how to keep the "Johnston" in Johnston High School.
Remembering Texas Soldiers Killed in Iraq

Jonathan D. Emard was killed June 4th during an assault near Tikrit, Iraq. The 20-year-old infantryman from Terrel, Texas was stationed at Fort Drum in New York. This was his first tour of duty. Emard's friends and family called him JD, and in online postings recalled his smile and his love of drawing, soccer and football. He joined the army in 2006 after graduating from Boles High School. His funeral is this morning at Lake Point Church in Rockwall. Thomas F. Duncan III, died June 9th as a result of gunshot wounds he received in Sinjar, Iraq. The department of defense indicates he may have been the victim of friendly fire. The 21-year-old army ranger from Rowlett, Texas was based in Fort Lewis, Washington. He joined the army in February of 2006 one year after graduating from high school. He leaves behind his wife, Megan and his parents: Thomas Duncan II, and Amanda Duncan. Funeral services have not yet been announced. The Department of Defense confirms that as of June 12th, 4,086 U.S. military personnel have been killed since the war in Iraq began in March 2003. 388 were from Texas.
